For more than 1,000 years, the Church has played a decisive role in Viborg’s history.
When Christianity came to Denmark, Viborg was chosen as a diocesan centre, with both a cathedral and a bishop. This marked the beginning of an era in which faith and power were closely intertwined.
For the next 500 years, Viborg Cathedral was part of the powerful Catholic Church of Europe. The Church’s wealth and influence were clearly visible in the city. Churches and monasteries rose across Viborg, shaping both its skyline and everyday life.
Then came the Reformation. In Viborg, the monk Hans Tausen challenged the old order, and the power of the Church was turned upside down. A new era began – one that changed the city, the faith and the balance of power.
