Museum Wibergis

You can sense it in Viborg. The sweep of history.

Because when you stand in the heart of Viborg, a thousand years of history lies behind you. Soon, you will be able to experience this history in an entirely new way.

Right in the Cathedral Quarter, in the former Western High Court building, Museum Wibergis tells the story of Jutland’s ancient capital – a city that for centuries exerted a magnetic pull on people with power, or ambitions to gain it. Behind the beautiful façade awaits a story about Viborg and power in Denmark. About how people have struggled for power – and exercised it.

It is a story of the king, the church, and the law.

It is the story of Denmark, seen from Viborg.

We invite you into a world unlike anything you have experienced before. As a visitor, you will encounter the story through twelve chapters. Each chapter unfolds in striking spaces with strong, tangible expressions: bold colours, moving animations, evocative music and impressive objects. Everything is composed to create a unique experience in every room.

The history of power can be felt. Both in Viborg – and at Museum Wibergis.

Royal Power

Denmark’s first cities were founded along fjords and by the sea. But not Viborg. This place was different. Here, people made offerings to the gods on “the sacred hill,” and here leading men gathered to pass the laws that applied to all of Jutland.

The Power of the Church

For more than 1,000 years, the Church has been a decisive force in Viborg’s history. When Christianity came to Denmark, Viborg was designated a diocesan city and was given both a cathedral and a bishop. This marked the beginning of a new era, in which faith and power went hand in hand.

Justice and Power

A thousand years ago, armed men of rank gathered under the open sky at the assembly site in Viborg. Here, laws were passed – and judgements delivered. Viborg became a centre of law and punishment. Of justice and responsibility.
